The democratic candidate for Governor Marvin Nelson toured the facilities at Minot State University Aug. 12.

Nelson was critical the actions of state lawmakers during the special session, characterizing it as 'kicking the can down the road.'

He addressed concerns over how to preserve academic programs across North Dakota, as the state continues to face the billion dollar shortfall.

"It's back to how do you guide this system to get our best value, and get our best investment and now, shall we say, throw the baby out with the bathwater. There's some things we've made huge investments in that we don't want to lose that investment in just cause of a relatively short-term financial crunch," Nelson said.

We also asked Nelson for his take on ensuring flood protection for Minot:

"I don't care if we have to borrow the money, or if we have to raise taxes, or whatever. If it came down to raising taxes in order to provide flood control for Minot, Minot's more important to me than the taxes are. We have to make that investment," he said.

GOP candidate Doug Burgum met with Minot leaders on flood protection in May.

Nelson will face off with Burgum and Libertarian candidate Marty Riske in the general election November 8.
